Job description: Electrical Costing / Estimation Engineer
Location: Yelahanka, Bangalore.
About The Gig
The Electrical Costing / Estimation Engineer is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates, bills of quantities (BOQ), budgets, and cost‐analysis for electrical systems, panels, installations & procurement. The role involves working with engineering, procurement and project teams to ensure accurate costing, vendor negotiations, and adherence to budgets and timelines.
What You’ll Do
Review drawings, specifications, single line diagrams, technical scopes to understand the electrical work (power distribution, LT/HT, switchgear, control panels, cabling, lighting, ELV systems) and prepare cost estimates accordingly.
Prepare detailed BOQs, quantity take‐offs for equipment, materials, labour, subcontracting, installation, testing & commissioning.
Develop cost models for materials (cables, wires, transformers, switchgear, relays, control panels), labour rates, overheads, logistics.
Solicit and evaluate quotations from vendors/suppliers for electrical equipment & related services; negotiate pricing to optimise cost while ensuring quality.
Maintain and update a cost database of materials, labour rates, market trends, supplier pricing, and historical project data.
Collaborate with procurement, engineering, manufacturing (or construction) teams to ensure cost assumptions and designs are aligned with cost targets (Design-to-Cost approach).
Provide tender support: assist in preparing technical & commercial proposals, clarifications, cost adjustments, variations & change orders.
Monitor cost vs actuals during project execution: support tracking of budget variances, cost controls, value engineering (VAVE) initiatives to reduce cost without compromising quality.
Generate reports for management: cost summary, risk/cost escalation, savings achieved, vendor performance, etc.
Ensure compliance with standards (IS, IEC, local norms), quality, safety and regulatory requirements as they impact costing.
Support continuous improvement: work on cost reduction strategies, standardisation of components, supplier consolidation, should-cost modelling.
What You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
Typically, 3-4 years of experience in electrical estimation / costing (depending on level) in MEP, manufacturing, panels, infrastructure or EPC projects. (For senior roles, 10+ years with team leadership)
Strong knowledge of electrical systems: power distribution, switchgear, control & relay panels, instrumentation, LT/HT systems, wiring, cabling, lighting.
Proficiency in MS Excel (complex formulas, modelling), AutoCAD (or equivalent), estimation software tools; knowledge of Revit/Trimble etc is a plus.
Good understanding of manufacturing/installation processes (e.g. panel manufacturing, cable harnessing, wiring, sub‐assembly) or construction practices.
Excellent analytical, negotiation, communication and documentation skills. Able to coordinate with vendors, design teams, procurement, project management.
Attention to detail, cost‐conscious mindset, ability to work under deadlines and handle multiple estimates.
Knowledge of local market rates (materials, labour) and supplier ecosystem is a strong advantage.
Familiarity with cost engineering techniques (should cost, value engineering, supply chain cost drivers) is preferable.
Experience in value engineering (VAVE), make-vs-buy decisions, cost reduction projects.
Exposure to ERP systems / cost software / manufacturing cost modelling.
Experience in OEM or panel manufacturing environment or EMS (electronic manufacturing services) for cable harness etc.
Understanding of foreign exchange / commodity cost impact (for imports).
Ability to visit site/vendor as required, and work cross-functionally across geographies.
Accuracy of cost estimates vs actual project cost.
Number of cost reduction or value engineering opportunities identified and realised.
Time taken to prepare estimates and submit tenders.
Vendor competitiveness / successful negotiations.
Maintenance of cost database and updates on market rate changes.
