EV Jobs for Civil Engineers: Charging Infrastructure Career Paths
Civil engineers are in unexpectedly high demand in India's EV rollout — for charging-station siting, structural design, grid integration and large-format charging-hub EPC. Here's the playbook.
CEO - eMobility.Careers
Most career conversations in the EV industry treat civil engineering as adjacent. It isn't. India's charging-network buildout is fundamentally a civil-engineering project — siting, soil studies, foundations, transformer enclosures, queuing-area design, drainage, lighting and grid-tie permits. The hiring is steady and the salary bands are competitive. Here's how to position into it.
Where the civil-engineering hiring lives
Charging operators with the biggest EPC builds: Tata Power EZ Charge, Statiq, ChargeZone, Adani TotalEnergies E-Mobility, BPCL EV, IOCL EV, Jio-bp Pulse. These run constant pipelines for site-survey engineers, RCC design engineers, transformer-yard layout planners and EHS leads.
EPC-services firms with dedicated EV-charging verticals: L&T Construction, Sterling & Wilson, Kalpataru Power, Hartek Group, GMR. Tata Projects EV builds large highway-corridor fast-charging hubs end-to-end and routinely posts 20-40 civil-engineer roles per year.
OEMs running gigafactories also hire civil engineers for plant construction + on-site EV-pilot infrastructure: Agratas (Sanand + Somerset), Ola Electric (Hosur gigafactory), Reliance New Energy (Jamnagar 4-factory complex).
Roles to target
- Site Survey + Acquisition Engineer (INR 6-12 lakh) — visits proposed sites, validates utility availability, runs soil + drainage assessment, prepares feasibility report.
- Charging-Hub Design Engineer (INR 8-15 lakh) — RCC + steel-frame design for charging hubs, transformer enclosures, canopy + drainage.
- EHS Lead, EV Charging EPC (INR 10-18 lakh) — safety + environmental compliance for charger installation projects.
- Project Manager, EV Highway Corridor (INR 18-35 lakh) — manages multi-site DC fast-charger rollout across an interstate corridor (typical scope: 30-100 sites).
- Senior Manager, EPC Operations (INR 25-45 lakh) — head-of-EPC role at a charging operator overseeing the all-India build pipeline.
Skills + certifications that move callbacks
AutoCAD + STAAD.Pro / ETABS for structural design. Familiarity with electrical-load layout (you'll be working alongside electrical engineers) is a meaningful differentiator — even a 2-month course in basic electrical-engineering for civil engineers separates you from the pack.
Specific charging-relevant certifications: AICTE-approved 'EV Charging Infrastructure' programme at DIYguru, Schneider Electric Energy University courses, BIS/BEE EV-charger installation modules. The 'I know the IEC 61851 + IS 17017 standard' answer wins interviews even if your day job is concrete.
Real-estate + utility-permit literacy: you should be able to read a DISCOM tariff schedule, understand land-use zoning rules, and explain the difference between a 11kV and 33kV grid tie. Most pure civil candidates can't — being the one who can is your edge.
Where to start applying
emobility.careers + LinkedIn for the operator + EPC roles directly. Tata Power EZ Charge, Statiq, ChargeZone are visible on both. For OEM gigafactory roles, the company careers page is usually the only canonical source — set up alerts.
Recruiters at Michael Page, Antal International, Randstad India have dedicated EV-EPC desks and source aggressively for the senior project-manager roles. Reach out cold with your CV + a one-line note about which corridor projects you've worked on.
Where to go from here
Civil engineering is one of the most under-discussed but most active hiring tracks in India's EV industry. The pay is competitive with general civil-engineering EPC work + 10-20%, the deal sizes are growing as charging-network buildouts accelerate, and the candidates who add a thin layer of EV-charging-standards literacy on top of their civil-engineering core become the obvious choice in interview rooms. Position the existing experience around charging-infra projects, add the cert layer, apply with intent — and the offer follows.
