EV Jobs for Data Scientists: Fleet Analytics, BMS ML and Predictive Maintenance
EV companies are aggressive hirers of data scientists — for fleet-route optimisation, BMS state-of-health ML, charging-load forecasting and connected-car telemetry. Here's where the jobs are.
CEO - eMobility.Careers
Every connected EV produces several MB of telemetry per day, and Indian charging operators are sitting on tens of TB of charging-session data already. The companies that can turn this data into product features — battery-pack life prediction, smart routing, dynamic charging-load forecasting — are the ones winning the next round. Data scientists who position for EV-domain work are in heavy demand.
Where the data-science hiring lives
OEMs with serious data-science teams: Tata Motors EV, Mahindra Electric, Ather Energy (one of the largest data-eng + data-science teams in Indian EV), Ola Electric, Hyundai Motor India.
Charging operators + fleet operators: Tata Power EZ Charge, Statiq, BluSmart, Magenta Mobility, Lithium Urban Tech (now Mufin), Sun Mobility, Battery Smart. Fleet operators in particular are obsessive about data-science teams because route optimisation directly impacts unit economics.
Connected-car platforms: Vecmocon, ION Energy, BattGenie, BattriX Software, JouleWatch India, Locale.ai (mobility analytics). Plus the autonomous-driving teams at KPIT, Tata Elxsi, L&T Technology Services.
High-demand role + salary bands
- Battery State-of-Health ML Engineer (3-7 yrs, INR 18-35 lakh) — degradation modelling, anomaly detection, cycle-life prediction on cell-level telemetry.
- Fleet Route Optimisation Scientist (3-7 yrs, INR 16-30 lakh) — multi-stop routing under battery + charging-window + driver-shift constraints.
- Charging Load Forecast Engineer (3-6 yrs, INR 15-28 lakh) — utility-scale ML for charging-grid load balancing + peak-shaving.
- Senior Connected-Car Data Engineer (5-10 yrs, INR 28-50 lakh) — pipeline architect for the multi-TB-per-day telemetry stream.
- Director, Data Science (10+ yrs, INR 50 lakh - 1 Cr+) — head-of-data role at a connected-EV OEM; typically 12-15 yrs spanning automotive + ML.
Skills + portfolio projects that get callbacks
Core stack: Python, SQL, PySpark + at least one of Snowflake / Databricks / BigQuery, MLflow / Weights & Biases for experiment tracking. Most EV teams use Kafka for the telemetry ingest layer and TimescaleDB / Postgres for the warehouse — familiarity with time-series-database patterns is a strong differentiator.
Portfolio projects that move callbacks: (1) a battery state-of-health model trained on the public NASA cell-cycling dataset; (2) a charging-station siting model using public DISCOM load data + Google Maps API; (3) a fleet-routing demo using the OpenStreetMap routing engine + simulated battery constraints. Any one of these on your GitHub puts you in the top 10% of candidates.
Domain knowledge that interview discussions test for
Understand the basics of Li-ion cell physics — voltage curves, internal resistance, SOC/SOH definitions, depth-of-discharge effect on cycle life. You don't need to derive Butler-Volmer from scratch but you should be able to talk to a battery engineer in their vocabulary.
Read the seminal papers: the Severson 2019 Nature paper on early cycle-life prediction, the Attia 2020 Nature paper on optimal fast-charging via Bayesian optimisation, plus a couple of OCPP-spec primers for the charging-network side. Cite them in interviews — visibly reading the literature is a meaningful signal.
Where to go from here
EV-industry data-science hiring is one of the few segments where Indian compensation has caught up with global benchmarks. The combination of explicit EV-domain depth + a portfolio of publicly verifiable projects + visible engagement with the research literature converts almost every interview round. Pick one of the three role tracks (BMS / fleet routing / charging load), build a portfolio project that maps directly to it, and apply through targeted channels with referrals.
