EV Supply Chain and Procurement Careers: Roles, Salaries and Skill Map
Cell sourcing, motor-magnet procurement, raw-material contracts and Tier-2 supplier management are central to every Indian EV OEM. Here's the supply-chain + procurement career roadmap.
CEO - eMobility.Careers
Every Indian EV OEM's biggest competitive lever is its supply chain — sourcing cells competitively, locking long-term magnet contracts, managing Tier-2 supplier quality at scale, hedging lithium / cobalt / copper exposure. Supply-chain + procurement professionals are central to making EV businesses work, and the hiring market reflects it.
Where the hiring lives
Indian OEMs with the biggest EV supply-chain teams: Tata Motors EV, Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Ather Energy, TVS Motor EV, Bajaj Auto EV, Hyundai Motor India, Mercedes-Benz India. Each runs ~30-100 person procurement + sourcing teams covering cells, motors, power electronics, BIW + interiors, and the long-tail Tier-2 spend.
Battery cell makers + integrators: Agratas, Reliance New Energy, Amara Raja, Exide Energy Solutions. These hire specialist procurement for cathode-precursor + lithium + cobalt + nickel + electrolyte raw materials.
Tier-1 suppliers with major EV procurement programmes: Bosch India, Continental India, Sona BLW, Bharat Forge, Motherson, Tata AutoComp. Plus the new wave of EV-charging-hardware companies (Exicom, Servotech, Volttic) building out HV-component supply chains for the first time.
Role + salary bands
- Sourcing Engineer (2-5 yrs, INR 10-18 lakh) — manages 5-10 supplier accounts for a specific commodity (sheet metal, harnesses, batteries, motors).
- Strategic Sourcing Manager (5-10 yrs, INR 22-40 lakh) — multi-supplier, multi-commodity coverage for a vehicle programme or platform.
- Category Manager, Battery / Cell Procurement (5-10 yrs, INR 28-55 lakh) — highest-demand role in 2026; manages cell + cathode + electrolyte sourcing and long-term offtake agreements.
- Head of Supply Chain, EV Programme (10-15 yrs, INR 60 lakh - 1.2 Cr) — owns the full P&L for a vehicle programme's supply chain (Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra BE 6, Ather 450X equivalents).
- Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) (15+ yrs, INR 1.5-3 Cr + ESOPs) — typically reports to CEO; sets the multi-year supply-base strategy and the Tier-1/Tier-2 relationship architecture.
Skills + certifications
Core skills: SAP S/4HANA SCM modules, Coupa or Ariba for sourcing, Bill of Materials (BoM) cost-decomposition, Should Cost modelling, supplier-risk frameworks. Six Sigma green-belt or black-belt is the minimum signal for senior roles.
EV-specific layers: cell-chemistry + battery-pack BoM fluency, magnet-grade familiarity (NdFeB grades + dysprosium content + supplier mapping), raw-material hedging basics (LME + Shanghai prices). Read the Benchmark Mineral Intelligence newsletter weekly + the BloombergNEF battery price survey annually.
Certifications: CSCP (APICS / ASCM) is the gold standard, plus CPSM from ISM-India for purchasing. AICTE-approved DIYguru supply-chain modules + the IIM Bangalore / IIM Calcutta EV-supply-chain executive education programmes round out the credentialing.
Career-switch advice
From traditional auto supply chain: lean into the differences — cell sourcing is a 5-10 year long-term offtake game, not a quarterly negotiation; magnet sourcing has geopolitical exposure that aluminium doesn't; the cost curve compresses faster than ICE supply chains. Show explicit cell + magnet + cathode-precursor knowledge in your CV bullets.
From IT / SaaS procurement: the gap is engineering-domain depth. A 3-month rotation through a basic powertrain + battery-architecture short course solves it. Pair with one shipped portfolio artefact (a public Substack analysing a specific OEM's cell-sourcing strategy, a should-cost model for a specific e-2W battery pack) and you stand out from every other career-switcher.
Where to go from here
Supply chain and procurement at Indian EV OEMs is a much higher-paying, much more strategic career track than the same function in traditional auto or IT. The cell + raw-material + magnet sourcing roles are the most heavily contested seats in 2026; candidates with explicit cell-chemistry + commodity-hedging literacy clear the bar where generalist procurement candidates don't. Position the existing experience around EV-relevant commodities, add the cert layer, and the senior-track offers follow.
