From ARAI to BHEL to state DISCOMs, the public sector has its own EV hiring market. Here are the agencies, the roles and how to apply.
CEO - eMobility.Careers
Government jobs are an underrated path into India's EV ecosystem. ARAI, ICAT, NATRiP, BHEL, BEL, CSIR-CEERI, CSIR-CECRI, NTPC, IOCL, HPCL and state DISCOMs all hire EV-specialised engineers. The pay is decent, the work is meaningful and the security is unmatched.
Where the hiring happens
- ARAI (Pune) — vehicle and component homologation
- ICAT (Manesar) — testing, certification, automotive R&D
- NATRiP / NATRAX (Pithampur) — high-speed test track and validation
- CSIR-CEERI (Pilani) — power electronics and SiC / GaN device research
- CSIR-CECRI (Karaikudi) — battery chemistry and electrolyte research
- BHEL Electric Mobility — EV powertrain and charging
- BEL — defence-adjacent EV electronics
- NTPC, IOCL, HPCL — charging-network deployment
- State DISCOMs (TANGEDCO, BESCOM, MSEDCL) — charging-grid integration
- DRDO — military mobility electrification
How to apply
Most central PSUs hire through GATE for engineering roles. Research institutes (CSIR, ARAI) hire through their own advertised positions on their websites and through gazette notifications. State DISCOMs use state-PSC exams.
What to expect on pay
Entry-level PSU CTC sits at ₹8-12 L for fresh BE/BTech graduates. Mid-level engineers (5-10 years) earn ₹12-22 L. Senior research scientists and chief engineers can clear ₹25-40 L. Below private-sector OEM scales but with strong job security and benefits.
Where to go from here
Government EV roles trade salary for stability and impact. If you want to shape India's EV regulatory and research landscape — ARAI, ICAT, CSIR — these are the right places to be.
