EV Jobs for Chemical Engineers: Battery Chemistry, Cell Design and Recycling

Chemical engineers are the most under-supplied talent in India's EV-cell push. Here are the roles, salary bands, the gigafactory hiring map and the skill ladder that lands offers.

India's lithium-cell push has created a hiring gap that chemical engineers are uniquely positioned to fill. Cell-research scientists, electrolyte-formulation chemists, electrode-coating engineers, recycling process engineers — every Indian gigafactory is hiring for these roles right now, and the supply of credentialed candidates is far below demand. Here's the practical roadmap.

Where the chemical-engineering hiring lives

Indian gigafactories actively hiring: Agratas (Tata, Sanand + Somerset), Ola Electric Cells (Hosur), Reliance New Energy (Jamnagar 4-factory complex, anchored by acquired IP from Faradion + Lithium Werks + Sokudo), Exide Energy Solutions (Bengaluru, partnered with SVOLT), Amara Raja Energy & Mobility (Telangana), TDSG India (Toshiba-Denso-Suzuki, Gujarat).

Tier-1 battery-pack assemblers + recyclers also hiring chemical engineers: Log9 Materials (Bengaluru), Battrixx (Pune), Cygni Energy (Hyderabad), GODI India (Hyderabad), Lohum Cleantech (Noida), BatX Energies (Gurugram), Attero Recycling (Noida).

Specialty chemicals + materials majors with EV-battery practices: BASF Battery Materials, Umicore, POSCO Future M India, IOLITEC, plus the cathode-precursor JVs being announced quarterly.

Roles by experience level

  • Cell Research Scientist (3-7 yrs, INR 12-25 lakh) — formulation work on cathode + anode + electrolyte chemistries. M.Tech / PhD strongly preferred.
  • Electrode Coating Engineer (3-7 yrs, INR 10-18 lakh) — manages the slurry-mixing + coating + drying + calendering process on the gigafactory floor.
  • Battery Recycling Process Engineer (3-7 yrs, INR 12-22 lakh) — hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical recovery of Li, Co, Ni from end-of-life packs.
  • Cell Production Quality Lead (5-10 yrs, INR 18-35 lakh) — pack defect-rate-management + DPPM benchmarks at the line level.
  • Director, Cell Engineering (12+ yrs, INR 60 lakh - 1.5 Cr) — the head-of-cell-engineering role at a gigafactory; typically PhD + 15 years at an international cell maker.

Skills that move you to the top of the shortlist

Hands-on experience with one or more of: cathode synthesis, electrolyte formulation, slurry rheology, electrode calendaring, cell formation cycles, pouch / cylindrical / prismatic cell assembly, dry-room operations.

Software fluency: BatPaC (DOE Argonne), COMSOL Multiphysics (battery modules), MATLAB / Python with electrochemistry libraries, Aspen Plus for process engineering. Published or co-authored work in JES, Joule, Journal of Power Sources is a strong differentiator.

Safety + compliance literacy: UN 38.3 transport-safety testing, AIS-156 phase 2, IS 16893, ISO 26262 for battery-pack-system-level safety, BIS battery-cell standards. The candidates who can recite these standards in interview discussions stand out.

Certifications + transitions

If you're transitioning from a non-EV chemical-engineering background (pharma, petrochemicals, specialty chemicals), the AICTE-approved DIYguru Battery Engineering certification + a 3-month MOOC from MIT OpenCourseWare on electrochemical energy storage rebuild your CV in 4-6 months. ARAI Academy also runs a 4-month residential battery-engineering programme.

For PhDs, the easiest path is to apply directly through the dedicated cell-research recruiting flows at Tata, Reliance, Ola Electric Cells. These openings are rarely posted publicly — university-research-network referrals dominate. Reach out via LinkedIn directly to the heads of cell engineering at those companies.

Where to go from here

Chemical engineers are the single most under-supplied talent pool in India's EV-cell buildout, and the salary bands reflect it. Senior cell scientists at gigafactories earn comparable to senior process engineers at top oil & gas majors, with much more growth runway. The signalling that wins is straightforward: explicit cell-chemistry domain (rather than generic chemical-engineering), one OEM-aligned certificate, one shipped portfolio of an electrochemistry simulation or a cell-coating bench experiment, and direct outreach to the small list of gigafactory hiring leaders. Done with that discipline, most chemical engineers convert to an EV-cell role within 4-6 months.
