India's EV startup ecosystem has matured. There's serious money, real product traction, and an emerging set of multi-stage scale-ups. Working at one can compound your career — or wreck it — based on how you evaluate the offer. Here's the framework.

Where startups concentrate

  • BMS + battery — Ion Energy, Vecmocon, Exponent Energy, Log9 Materials, RACE Energy
  • Charging + grid — Bolt.Earth, Statiq, ChargeZone, Numocity, ElectricPe
  • Battery swap + fleet — Sun Mobility, Battery Smart, ChargeUp
  • OEMs (venture) — Ather, Ola, River, Eka, EarthEnergyEV
  • Specialty hardware — Cellpropulsion, Pi Beam, AdverTV

Comp structure

Most startups offer base + variable + ESOPs. Variable is 10-20% for IC roles, higher for sales. ESOPs vest over 4 years with a 1-year cliff. Strike price is typically the last round's preferred-share price — at growth-stage startups this can be meaningful.

What to look at in an offer

  • ESOP percentage of fully-diluted equity (not just number of options)
  • Last round valuation and likely next round timing
  • Vesting cliff + schedule
  • Liquidation preferences in the cap table
  • Buyback policy if you leave
  • Tax implications under Section 17(2)

Red flags

  • ESOP plan exists but is exclusive of recent rounds (constant dilution)
  • Strike price is at preferred-share level with no discount
  • No clear path to liquidity (no IPO timeline, no secondary)
  • Founders unwilling to discuss cap table specifics
  • Heavy reliance on FAME / PLI subsidies for unit economics

When startups make sense

If you're early-career (under 8 years), a well-funded EV startup compounds skills and reputation faster than a corporate equivalent. If you're senior (15+ years), join one only if the equity package + role scope materially exceeds your alternative.

Where to go from here

EV startups offer compressed-time learning that's hard to find elsewhere. Evaluate offers like an investor would — focus on the equity story, not the headline base. Done right, a startup role accelerates careers by 3-5 years.
