India's electric-vehicle industry has moved from a curiosity into one of the country's most aggressive talent markets. As gigafactories come online, charging networks expand and OEMs accelerate their EV portfolios, a clear hierarchy of high-paying roles has emerged. Here are the ten roles paying the most in 2026 — and what it takes to land them.

1. Chief Technology Officer (EV)

EV CTOs lead engineering organisations across battery, motor, vehicle integration and software. CTC routinely lands in the ₹1.2–2.5 Cr range at growth-stage OEMs and ₹2–4 Cr with ESOPs at venture-backed cell or charging companies.

Candidates have 18+ years of experience, with at least one ICE-to-EV transformation under their belt. Strong external presence — speaking at SAE, ARAI and government policy forums — is part of the job.

2. Head of Battery Engineering

The senior-most technical authority on the company's most strategic subsystem. CTC ranges from ₹80 L to ₹2 Cr depending on whether the role is at an OEM, cell manufacturer or a venture-funded battery startup.

3. Power Electronics Architect

Architects who can design 400V or 800V traction inverters with SiC MOSFETs are the rarest commodity in the Indian EV labour market. CTC bands sit at ₹55 L–1.4 Cr for principal-level roles.

4. Battery Cell Engineer

Senior cell engineers with electrochemistry depth — formulation, formation, characterisation — land between ₹35 L and ₹80 L in India's growing cell manufacturing ecosystem.

5. BMS Firmware Engineer (Senior / Lead)

Lead BMS firmware engineers with shipped products land ₹35 L–₹75 L. ISO 26262 ASIL-D experience adds a clean 20% premium.

6. EV Functional Safety Engineer (ISO 26262)

Lead ISO 26262 engineers earn ₹40 L–₹90 L. The role is critical and supply-constrained — every EV OEM and Tier-1 supplier in India is hiring for it.

7. EV Plant Head (Manufacturing)

Plant heads at greenfield EV facilities earn ₹80 L–₹2 Cr. The role carries P&L accountability for ramps that span billions of rupees of capex.

8. EV Cybersecurity Engineer (ISO 21434)

Senior vehicle-cybersecurity engineers earn ₹35 L–₹75 L. UN R155 / R156 compliance has made the role unavoidable for exported vehicles.

9. Cell Manufacturing Process Engineer

Senior process engineers with mixing / coating / formation expertise are hired at ₹25 L–₹55 L by Reliance, Ola, Exide and Amara Raja as they scale gigafactories.

10. EV Data Scientist (Battery Analytics)

ML engineers who can model battery health, range and warranty exposure command ₹30 L–₹70 L. Strong electrochemistry intuition + ML rigour is the rare combination.

Where to go from here

If you're moving into the EV industry from IT, traditional automotive or core engineering, prioritise the roles where India has structural shortage — battery, BMS, power electronics and functional safety. The salary premium for those roles will hold for at least the next five years.
